AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

"Better to light a candle for one lost dog than to curse the darkness of man's indifference. Saving just one dog won't change the world, but it surely will change the world for that one dog."

BESSIE (BESS)

ADOPTED!

Bessie (Bess) is an adorable, calm and playful girl who was relinquished due to a serious illness in her family. She's approximately four years of age and very healthy: she's spayed; freshly groomed; and just received all her vaccinations, including rabies, which is good for three years in Missoula County. She loves cats and all dogs, adores giving kisses and rolling over for belly rubs, and is thrilled with car rides. Bessie's a prize for some lucky family -- It'll be love at first sight!

DUDLEY "DO-RIGHT"

Ernie, now Dudley, was renamed by our founder, Donna Owens, and it seems to fit nicely. He's from a wild hoarder situation, and arrived at our shelter with assistance from one of our wonderful shelter supporters, Kirsten Holland, who works at the pound near Kalispell, Montana. Dudley was destined for a life of freezing cold on the mountain, where he would of been running wild and living in the snow (that's romantic only in your imagination). Despite such a beginning, he's certainly sweet, happy, and playful boy. Neutered, wormed, UTD, and a dental exam all make this precious boy ready for any loving family. Please do give him a chance at a forever home. It's hard to tell his age, but my guess is around 2 1/2 to 3 years old. Both Dudley and Flynn were brought into safety and warmth by Kirsten. What a blessing she is to care so much, and we're all so grateful to her.

NOTE: Dudley was recently diagnosed with heartworm. He is currently on medication, and the treatment appears to be successful, so please don't let it stop you from considering this precious, little basset soul!

NOTE: Dudley arrived here with Flynn. Originally they got along fine, and we were thinking of adopting them out together if possible. However, over the course of their stay a rivalry has developed, and we've decided that it'll be best if they're adopted separately. DUDLEY PLAYS JUST GREAT WITH EVERYONE ELSE!

FLYNN

ADOPTED!

Just like his friend, Dudley, Flynn came to us from the same hoarder situation and was doomed to live out in the ice, cold and snow. This precious, very friendly, neutered boy has a warm loving spot with us until his forever home can be found. Flynn's around a year old, and healthy with sparkly clean, white teeth. He adores retrieving and playing with his toys. He might be Ladybugger's offspring, but it's hard to tell since he came from a group that also had lots of different bassets and mixes. Flynn's just a hoot to watch and will make any family chuckle and giggle with his joyful antics.

NOTE: Flynn came into our shelter with Dudley. At first they got along swell, and we thought we'd adopt them out together if possible. However, over the course of their stay a rivalry has developed, and we've decided that it'll be best if they're adopted separately. FLYNN PLAYS JUST FINE WITH EVERYONE ELSE!

LADYBUG

Ladybug came from a sad situation. She wasn't given her proper due as a Princess, as she deserves! This healthy, spayed, five-year-old, black basset mix is just precious. She's very timid, but loves people, once she knows you won't drag her around on her back. Like I said, she wasn't given her proper due as a Princess.

Ladybug now comes into the house to spend quiet time with the gang here, and she gets along nicely with dogs, cats, and is now accustomed to horses. Her middle name is "Shy", but with proper love and attention she can become a very special part of anyone's household.

This little lady also has an adorable one- year-old basset mix son, Freckles, who you can see listed above.

LADY AND PEGGY

Lady

Lady and Peggy are now once again up for adoption together. You may recall that was the deal when they originally came into the shelter. But Peggy became very ill and was moved into the "permanent residents" area of the shelter, leaving Lady to be adopted alone. However, after months of treatment with special food and nutrients, Peggy's lab values are now normal, showing her kidneys are healthy and stable. So, she and Lady are once again up for adoption together!

Lady's around seven years of age, but still playful. She’s housetrained, healthy and just an all-round doll. She loves to bark at cats, and that’ll drive ya crazy. So a home without cats is a must.

Peggy

Here's Peggy doing what she does best . . . hangin' around! We were right -- when she was ill, she benefited tremendously from enjoying our living room with the rest of the gang, and our huge, new "Creek Crossing" and lovely back yard, which is maintained for all the houndies here. She's now recovered beautifully. We love her dearly, and are so happy that, once again, she and Lady will be able to go together, once they find that perfect "forever" home.

PERMANENT RESIDENTS of the "HOUNDIE HOMESTEAD"

The following loveable and charming bassets are considered by our Board to be unadoptable and are therefore permanent residents of Basset Rescue of Montana's "Houndie Homestead".

Leslie's newest addition to the Houndie Homestead is Minnie!

MINNIE

New Houndie Homestead member!

Here’s senior basset (there’s no telling how old she really is) Minnie, showing off her lovely self on the Basset Rescue of Montana deck. She was living with the sweetest Libby, Montana foster family, who comes over often to help us. Obviously from this photo, Minnie was used as a breeder in a puppy mill, but oh my what a DOLL BABY she is. She may be shy, with her teeth half gone, yet she’s getting along very nicely in our house with our other seniors girls, Lucy (now ATB), Edna, and Sophia. Minnie’s even learned to deftly use the doggie door, gracefully moving through it without catching her hanging “skirt”.

Minnie was seen by our eye specialist in Spokane, and is now on eye medication, so hopefully she’ll not go blind. We've completed Minnie’s medical care with a blood anaylysis and a good tartar scraping, and we're happy to announce that now she's in tip-top shape.

Thank you to Chris, Julie, and Dale in Libby for all their compassionate care for her 'til she got here. Also, I must thank Helena Poist for her endless devotion to saving precious dogs like this.

NOTE: Minnie has had an eye surgically removed, and is in kidney failure. She is receiving medication, being closely monitored, and remains stable.

MINNIE IS A BLESSING TO HAVE HERE!

EDNA

Has moved on to The Bridge

Though she wasn't able to stay with us long, we'd come to adore her, and will miss her. Edna loved her life here and was a blessing to us. She was taken too soon by Cancer. Goodbye, Edna -- we'll always love you!

Whiley

"Da grandma shur do come in handy when da family needs to re-home da dog!" At least, that's what Whiley thinks, and for good reason! Whiley came back with me after the Droolapalooza one Labor Day a few years back. Aw heck, what's ONE MORE HOUND? Whiley now gets special food for his severe allergies. He just loves to be with the rest of the pack. He also sleeps on my chest with all the other kids. Gee, I wonder why can't I breathe? Hmmmm . . . Whiley, unlike my other kids, actually comes when called!!! He'll learn, he'll learn. Thank you to Mike, Hope, Eric, and my little grandson, Nicholas, for letting me bring Whiley home. Eric went off to college and time with his family became limited, so I took his dog, Whiley, to join us at Partner's Place so he can continue to get all the attention he craves.

NOTE: Whiley is now in kidney failure, but is receiving lots of love and care, and is stable.

LUCY

Goodbye, Lucy!

UPDATE: Lucy has passed on to The Rainbow Bridge . . . her time with us was too short, and she will be deeply missed! Click on the thumbnail below to read Leslie's memorial.

Sophia "Sophie" Loren

Sophia ("Sophie")is just that, the Sophia Loren of bassets. And just like her namesake, she's aging beautifully and is a show girl, even though she's completely blind. Sophie is in a safe yard here at Basset Rescue of Montana, and she knows every inch of it. When out on the rescue's ten acres, she puts her nose to the ground and boy, is she off and running. She actually tries to herd the horses from her side of the fence (thank goodness) and when she sneaks under a certain part of the gate, she eats whatever she finds in the corrals . . . yikes! A TRUE RANCH BASSET, INDEED! Her favorite morning thing is, once she wakes up in my bedroom, she comes out from underneath my foot stool and wiggles her butt something fierce until I notice and scratch it. She is such a hoot! I love her dearly. Sophie came from the Bozeman, Montana shelter, where she was dumped because she had tumors. Thank God Basset Rescue of Montana has her now, safe and, for now, sound. Sophie finally had her lipoma removed July 5, 2007 by Dr. Rick Sherr from Great Falls, Montana. Dr. Sherr is a wonderful surgeon who does remarkable work. THANK YOU TO A WONDERFUL, CARING MAN FOR HELPING BASSET SOPHIA!

Colbee

Colbee is one of the best rescues in the house. He gets along so well with everyone that Leslie decided he needed to stay! He is such a wonderful, happy boy who greets everyone with his bent tail just a-waggin wildly, and then afterward is so content to be just "one of the gang”. After receiving only a few inquiries about him, and all those either had small kids under seven or had no fenced yard for him . . . We decided to just give him a permanent home here at Basset Rescue of Montana.

Thorbus

Thorbus has also been classified as a permanent resident of Basset Rescue of Montana, along with Sophia and Colbee Ames.
