"Better to light a candle for one lost dog than to curse the darkness of man's indifference. Saving just one dog won't change the world, but it surely will change the world for that one dog."

SLOAN
ADOPTED
Want a typical, loving, friendly basset hound? Sloan was a stray up in the Libby, Montana area. He’ll be neutered on May 29, 2009 and receive a thorough vet check. He’s good with kids, cats, adults, has a shiny coat, a long thin body, and appears to be house trained. Sloan is being cared for by our friends at Pet Connection, near Troy, Montana. If you're interested in learning more about Sloan, call Juli at 406-291-4091, or email her
FRECKLES
One year old Freckles is an unusually colored Basset mix (he looks like a basset crossed with German shorthair, or maybe Chesapeak Bay retriever) who has the cutest basset waddle you ever saw. He's the one year old son of our Ladybug, also in our shelter, both of whom were rescued from their previous home. This cutie's eyes never leave ya when ya go for a walk. He wiggles his tail constantly, and is the hit of his foster home's neighborhood.
Friendly, playful, and healthy, he has all his shots, has been wormed, and is now neutered. His housetraining is going great and his bath will be given as soon as his incision (from neutering) is fully healed. Freckles is the perfect family pooch! So, fill out your application quickly, 'cause he won't stay long in our rescue! Our foster family, Cheryl & her son Scottie, will be including Freckles with their other dogs, Bessie and Buddy, during after school walks and weekend playtimes. This will certainly help Freckles overcome what little is left of his shyness. What a great foster family! Thank you,Cheryl and Scottie!
LADYBUG
Ladybug came from a sad situation. She wasn't given her proper due as a Princess, as she deserves! This healthy, spayed, five-year-old, black basset mix is just precious. She's very timid, but loves people, once she knows you won't drag her around on her back. Like I said, she wasn't given her proper due as a Princess.
Ladybug now comes into the house to spend quiet time with the gang here, and she gets along nicely with dogs, cats, and is now accustomed to horses. Her middle name is "Shy", but with proper love and attention she can become a very special part of anyone's household.
This little lady also has an adorable one- year-old basset mix son, Freckles, who you can see listed above.

LADY AND PEGGY
Lady
Lady and Peggy are now once again up for adoption together. You may recall that was the deal when they originally came into the shelter. But Peggy became very ill and was moved into the "permanent residents" area of the shelter, leaving Lady to be adopted alone. However, after months of treatment with special food and nutrients, Peggy's lab values are now normal, showing her kidneys are healthy and stable. So, she and Lady are once again up for adoption together!
Lady's around seven years of age, but still playful. She’s housetrained, healthy and just an all-round doll. She loves to bark at cats, and that’ll drive ya crazy. So a home without cats is a must.
Peggy
Here's Peggy doing what she does best . . . lounging about! We were right -- when she was ill, she benefited tremendously from enjoying our living room with the rest of the gang, and our huge, new "Creek Crossing" and lovely back yard, which is maintained for all the houndies here. She's now recovered beautifully. We love her dearly, and are so happy that, once again, she and Lady will be able to go together, once they find that perfect "forever" home.

PERMANENT RESIDENTS of the "HOUNDIE HOMESTEAD"
The following loveable and charming bassets are considered by our Board to be unadoptable and are therefore permanent residents of Basset Rescue of Montana's "Houndie Homestead".
Leslie's newest additions to the Houndie Homestead are Minnie and Edna!
MINNIE
New Houndie Homestead member!
Here’s senior basset (there’s no telling how old she really is) Minnie, showing off her lovely self on the Basset Rescue of Montana deck. She was living with the sweetest Libby, Montana foster family, who comes over often to help us. Obviously from this photo, Minnie was used as a breeder in a puppy mill, but oh my what a DOLL BABY she is. She may be shy, with her teeth half gone, yet she’s getting along very nicely in our house with our other seniors girls, Lucy (now ATB), Edna, and Sophia. Minnie’s even learned to deftly use the doggie door, gracefully moving through it without catching her hanging “skirt”.
Minnie was seen by our eye specialist in Spokane, and is now on eye medication, so hopefully she’ll not go blind. We've completed Minnie’s medical care with a blood anaylysis and a good tartar scraping, and we're happy to announce that now she's in tip-top shape.
Thank you to Chris, Julie, and Dale in Libby for all their compassionate care for her 'til she got here. Also, I must thank Helena Poist for her endless devotion to saving precious dogs like this.
MINNIE IS A BLESSING TO HAVE HERE!
EDNA
New Houndie Homestead member!
This is our happy, petite, senior girl named Edna. She might be eight-to-fourteen years old, it’s just hard to tell. In the videos you can see how spry and happy she is, wagging her sweet tail. Edna's lab work showed a very healthy gal. There’s no one that she doesn’t like: dogs; cats; birds; kids; men . . . all are Edna's favorites. And what an easy keeper! Edna came to us from a shelter in Idaho Falls. Her toenails and teeth needed IMMEDIATE attention, as did her coat, which had white flecks all over it. After thorough grooming and special food, Edna’s now thriving. She prefers the house here we call "Houndie Homestead", as the shelter suites and runs are just not "her style". She also loves the yard, comes when called 100% of the time, and uses the doggie door.
When bassets become senior girls, there is just nothing better than having them share your couch, warm your feet, and enjoy your life with you . . . they're calm, affectionate, have no bad habits, and are easy keepers, to boot. And that's why Edna has a new, permanent home here at the "Houndie Homestead"!
Edna, groggy after a good teeth cleaning.
Edna's shockingly overgrown nails.

LUCY
Goodbye, Lucy!
UPDATE: Lucy has passed on to The Rainbow Bridge . . . her time with us was too short, and she will be deeply missed! Click on the thumbnail below to read Leslie's memorial.

Sophia "Sophie" Loren
Sophia ("Sophie")is just that, the Sophia Loren of bassets. And just like her namesake, she's aging beautifully and is a show girl, even though she's completely blind. Sophie is in a safe yard here at Basset Rescue of Montana, and she knows every inch of it. When out on the rescue's ten acres, she puts her nose to the ground and boy, is she off and running. She actually tries to herd the horses from her side of the fence (thank goodness) and when she sneaks under a certain part of the gate, she eats whatever she finds in the corrals . . . yikes! A TRUE RANCH BASSET, INDEED! Her favorite morning thing is, once she wakes up in my bedroom, she comes out from underneath my foot stool and wiggles her butt something fierce until I notice and scratch it. She is such a hoot! I love her dearly. Sophie came from the Bozeman, Montana shelter, where she was dumped because she had tumors. Thank God Basset Rescue of Montana has her now, safe and, for now, sound. Sophie finally had her lipoma removed July 5, 2007 by Dr. Rick Sherr from Great Falls, Montana. Dr. Sherr is a wonderful surgeon who does remarkable work. THANK YOU TO A WONDERFUL, CARING MAN FOR HELPING BASSET SOPHIA!
Colbee
Colbee is one of the best rescues in the house. He gets along
so well with everyone that Leslie decided he needed to stay! He is such a
wonderful, happy boy who greets everyone with his bent tail just a-waggin
wildly, and then afterward is so content to be just "one of the gang”.
After receiving only a few inquiries about him, and all those either had
small kids under seven or had no fenced yard for him . . . We decided to just give him a permanent home here at Basset Rescue of Montana.
Thorbus has also been classified as a permanent resident of Basset Rescue of Montana, along with Sophia and Colbee Ames.
